Center For Applied Finance Education

Learning practice of finance moves to a new dimension in CAFE, which is:

  • A simulated trading room with state-of-the-art financial software and real-time data-feed services, utilizing a powerful hardware infrastructure,
  • A laboratory providing a sophisticated learning environment in finance and other related areas,
  • A smart classroom allowing hands-on finance education.

CAFE has 25 workstations in the classroom and 3 workstations in the adjacent business suite. Each workstation has two LCD displays and is connected to data-feed from all over the world with further access to supporting software. Among these software are financial information networks and databases (Thomson Reuters DataStream (Use only in Information Center) , Matriks, Rasyonet StockGround, WRDS, CRSP, CompuStat, SDC Platinum, Mergent FISD, Execucomp), virtual trading and portfolio simulation tools (FTS), and financial analytics software (FINCAD*).

Here are some examples of what students are able to do in CAFE:

  • Follow real trading activity guided by an expert via video-conferencing
  • Trade with your classmates, or enter world-wide trading competitions using FTS, a financial trading simulation software
  • Research companies using comprehensive data from all over the world

*FINCAD is the leading provider of financial analytics and derivatives management solutions, enabling global market participants to make informed hedging and investment decisions and comply with financial standards, including hedge accounting. FINCAD provides software and services supporting the valuation, reporting and risk management of derivatives and fixed income portfolios to banks, corporate treasuries, hedge funds, asset management firms, audit firms, and governments. Sabancı School of Management is a participant in FINCAD's Academic Software Endowment Program.

The First Finance Lab of Turkey & Southeast Europe is now in Sabancı University!

Sabancı University, launched its new Masters in Finance program (MiF) for the future finance managers to equip them with the qualifications needed in the finance sector. Under the consultancy of Professional Finance Executives, the first step of the program, CAFE (Center for Applied Finance Education) is open now in Sabancı University.

​Commencement of CAFE that aims to enhance traditional finance education with applied learning, was held by Professor Nakiye Boyacigiller, Dean of the Sabancı School of Management, in April 15th, 2008. Faculty members Hakan Orbay and Koray Simsek presented detailed information about the program and made a demonstration about the features of CAFE to the audience. There was a video-conference connection with Resit Toygar, Treasury Vice President of Akbank.

Professor Nakiye Boyacigiller, the Dean of the Sabancı School of Management at Sabancı University, in her speech, highlighted the importance of having a masters degree in business life. Boyacigiller also emphasized her belief as CAFE will contribute a new dimension to the Turkish finance education.

Nakiye Boyacigiller also added, “Students will find the opportunity to apply the theoretical finance courses in​ CAFE, and for those who had trainings in Masters in Finance in Sabancı University, will be well-qualified staff and will commence business world immediately without the necessity of additional trainings”.

The commencement of CAFE is held by Guler Sabancı, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. The President of Sabancı University Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioglu and the Advisory Board members also attended the commencement. IMKB president Huseyin Erkan was also in the commencement.

Masters in Finance and the First Finance Laboratory of Turkey

CAFE (Center for Applied Finance Education) has 24 workstations in the classroom, and 3 workstations in the adjacent business suite. Each workstation has two LCD displays and is connected to data-feed from all over the world with further access to supporting software. Students will have access to Reuters, Bloomberg and Matriks terminals as well as E-Signal Future Source.

Here are some examples of what you will be able to do at CAFE,

  • Follow real trading activity guided by an expert via video-conferencing
  • Trade between classmates, or enter world-wide trading competitions using FTS, a financial trading simulation software
  • With Fin CAD XL, a software used by over 25 thousand finance professionals, create new derivative products and determine their prices
  • Research companies using comprehensive data from all over the world.
